Important information about what Luka Bear is, how it should be used, and how information is handled.

Luka Bear is an assistive, non-medical companion device. It is intended for general wellness, companionship, engagement, and caregiver support. It is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, mitigate, or prevent any disease or condition. It is not an emergency response system and is not a substitute for professional medical care, supervision, or emergency services. In an emergency, always call 911.

Non-medical & general wellness

Luka Bear provides companionship, conversation, reminders, activities, engagement, and caregiver notification features. These features support general wellness and daily routine. They are not a clinical service and do not provide medical monitoring, diagnosis, treatment, or therapy of any kind.

Statements on this website describe what the product does functionally. They are not claims of medical or clinical benefit, and individual experiences vary.

Not an emergency or safety system

Luka’s caregiver notification and check-in features are convenience features, not life-safety systems. They depend on power, internet connectivity, device function, and correct configuration, and may be delayed or unavailable. Do not rely on Luka for emergency detection or response. Always maintain appropriate emergency planning, supervision, and access to 911 and professional care.

How the help call works. When the person says a help phrase such as “I need help” or “I fell” while Luka is in Active mode, Luka tells them it is letting their caregiver know and phones the caregiver. Luka does not send text messages for help. Calls come from Luka’s number, (472) 444-0101, so you can save it and recognize it. Luka never calls 911 and is not an emergency response system — in an emergency, call 911.

Caregiver remains responsible

Luka is a tool that supports caregivers; it does not replace human judgment, supervision, or care. The caregiver and care team remain responsible for the person’s safety and wellbeing at all times.

Privacy & information handling

We take privacy seriously. The following describes, in plain terms, how information is handled. This summary may be updated and is supplemented by our full Privacy Policy.

What the device handles

  • Live camera view and voice: The Caregiver Companion App can show approved caregivers a live camera view of the room and lets them speak through Luka. There is no 24/7 recording.
  • Activity clips: Short activity clips are made only when Away Monitoring is turned on. They are stored in the cloud and deleted automatically after 7 days, or sooner by hand.
  • Profile information: Caregiver-provided details (such as a biography, family names, photos, reminders, and preferences) used to personalize the companion experience.
  • Voice content: Optional recorded or uploaded family voice samples used to personalize how Luka speaks, where that feature is enabled.

How information is protected

  • The Caregiver Companion App opens from a private caregiver link protected by an access key. Luka never opens ports on your home network.
  • A log shows every time the camera view is opened.
  • Access is limited to authorized devices and caregivers; setup can be locked behind an administrator PIN.
  • We do not sell personal information.

Consent

Because Luka can include a camera and microphone and may serve a person who cannot themselves provide consent, the caregiver or legally authorized representative is responsible for ensuring appropriate consent and for informing household members and visitors of the device’s capabilities, consistent with applicable law.

About Talking Messages (AI-generated video) — coming soon

Talking Messages are in pilot now and not yet available on all Luka units. When the feature arrives, it will let a family caregiver create a short video of a loved one’s face speaking a message the caregiver writes, in that person’s voice, played on the resident’s Luka. It is being built with deliberate limits:

  • It is a one-way message — not a conversation or a live call, and it never implies the person is really calling.
  • It is family-initiated and consent-based — the caregiver confirms they have the right to use each person’s image and voice before any video is made.
  • Every video is clearly labeled “AI-generated.”
  • It is offered only for living people the caregiver is authorized to represent, with a usage cap per device.

Talking Messages are meant to comfort — a familiar face and voice for someone who may be isolated or living with dementia. If a recipient ever seems confused or distressed by a Talking Message, please stop using the feature for that person and notify the care team.

Accuracy & changes

We work to keep this site accurate, but content is provided “as is” and may be updated at any time. Features, availability, and pricing may change. Reimbursement eligibility and coverage depend on the individual’s plan, state, and program and are not guaranteed.
